3 Year Old Skills and Concepts
Our three year olds work toward mastery of a variety of age-appropriate skills and concepts throughout the preschool year. Some of these abilities may emerge as the child approaches four years of age. These skills and concepts are introduced throughout the preschool year using a variety of activities. Some of these are listed below.
Social Skills - enjoys being with other children, learns the give and take of play, participates in a group, understands how to solve conflicts with words, understands that self and others change
Language Skills - speaks in short sentences, memorizes and repeats simple songs, uses plural forms of words correctly, uses pronouns correctly, describes action in pictures, listens to short stories, follows two directions, knows body parts, tells own name and age and gender
Cognitive Skills - identifies common sounds, recalls three objects visually presented, pairs related objects, draws figure with facial and body parts
Math - counts to 10, sorts objects by size and shape, knows shapes, understands concepts of full and empty
Science - knows colors, understands there are many kinds of animals, understands that seeds grow into plants
Gross Motor Skills - throws and catches balls, hops on one foot, tiptoes, moves body to simple commands
Fine Motor Skills - holds crayon with fingers (not fist), strings beads, finger paints, uses scissors correctly, laces, works puzzles, copies lines and circles (pre-writing skills)
